So I came across this instagram reel today and I have to say, 90's girls do have eternal crush on Shah Rukh Khan (majority). He made us believe in romance which was and is mostly a hidden activity, PDA often categorized as vulgar. And we all grew to the aspirational Shah Rukh's love.
The fangirl in me watched most of his movies in theatre in the first week of release itself. The fangirl also felt sorry for his long slump and silently waited for a comeback and what did I get?
Pathaan, rave reviews for the movie, praised as Shah Rukh's comeback got me excited to the extent that I went to watch it in theatre with my 4 month old baby girl. I was not disappointed, of course Deepika always adds charm to the show. I was pleasantly surprised by John Abraham who in reality had never impressed with acting skills before that. Then there's Salman's cameo and the duo's banter. So Pathaan did not feel so much of Shah Rukh movie. To clarify, its not Yash in KGF or Allu Arjun in Pushpa which are more one man shows. But nevertheless, good to see Shah Rukh revered as king again despite movie's obvious flaws and over the top sequences.
And then comes Jawaan with a South Indian director who never impressed me after his debut which now feels like such an outlier. But the mix of attires Shah Rukh tried, Nayanatara as formidable co star as ever and bunch of talented actresses gave so much hope for the movie. Not to forget Vijay Sethupathi, I can never forget him. This time it was not at all favorable to watch it in theatres for me but was really happy for Shah Rukh as Jawaan bombarded the theatres. So when it hit OTT, I could not worry about my daughter's screen time, it was Shah Rukh's time.
Boy, it was painful to watch some parts of the movie. Deepika, Nayanathara, Sanya, Priyamani all wasted. I dont even want to get to Vijay Sethupathi. But if I stick to Shah Rukh, just why? WHY?
Shah Rukh melted hearts when he looked at his lady love. I cant unsee ever Harry looking at Sejal hiding in a boat after they run from shady men. In Jawaan, let alone lady love, I could not see the warmth towards Nayanathara's daughter even for a second which was supposed to be a major element. Even when Rahul in Chennai Express climax, spoke the broken Tamil which was borderline offensive, I could only see the strong emotions Rahul has suppressed over the time and appreciate the effort. But as the older Shah Rukh, I could not even appreciate his natural wit when it mostly felt careless. For a movie as long as Jawaan is, you would expect atleast one moment where Shah Rukh will make you cry. The set pieces that will excite you and thrill are not enough to make up for the lack of sentiment.
What I am saying is, it is well deserved reverence Shah Rukh has gained back but the movies through which this happened, didn't really struck chord. Violence Violence Violence, that seems to be the current fashion. Let's get one thing clear. Violence and Action are not the same. Action keeps your adrenaline kicking but Violence scares you. Don had more nuance for the story and Shah Rukh's role without heavy violence. Ayan of Surya had amazing action sequences way back. So I am all in for Shah Rukh for action movies but please don't take away the pleasure of seeing him emote the hell out of our souls.
