I am genuinely curious now at the content process of Netflix. So this movie just dropped, 'Do Patti' which I would have probably skipped if not for the review by 'Tried & Refused Productions'. However I wouldn't consider this a review as one, I dont have much to say about the movie and two, I have watched 2 hours and 7 minutes movie in 1 hour 10 minutes or so.
But I keep wondering if there are some elements of writing that are unique to Netflix like,
1. Rushed creation process: So it is a business, everyone agrees. I have spent considerable time with business writing, either myself or working with other writers. I know the way it works and how it hinders actual process of creation. On top of that, Google and Meta and their antics. From Do Patti I can definitely gather the rush from the wobbly script that was built. A story and script that otherwise could have been a delight.
2. Need for integrating unnecessary stars for the pull: This again derails the writing process as you write for the stars but you are not casting for the characters. It was a nightmare watching Kajol in this as I was so sure someone like Ashwini from 'Merry Christmas' or Jaideep from 'Maharaj' or even bringing Ravi Kishen also would have been enough. Why the obsession with launching dormant or yester year stars?
3. Certain length requirements: So the movie could have been easily trimmed to really 1 hour 30 minutes or so. Like there is no real need for the longest expected reveal of the thriller history. It only makes sense if Netflix is having a data team that gives insights on the required amount of the movie length for building engagement stats. Like did they even see, 'Article 365'? Such an elegant reveal and climax.
4. Riding current Hollywood sentiment: So this feels like a Indian movie reply for 'Its Ends With Us'. And I am like 70% sure that was the requirement given to the writers. This one I am not complaining about but if you are trying the Indian version, why not make it more relatable? Like, I dont know, may be touch upon the dynamics, reasons (lies) people tell themselves.
Anyhow, lovely that I could make a discussion without spoilers. Loving Kriti more and more, hope she shines for the theatre releases too. Hating that disclaimers killing the non-existent suspense too.
