Dangal - Why was the craze?

Taare Zameen Par

3 Idiots

Whats the point?

Leave the young ones be themselves. Appreciate their uniqueness and build their strength. And then Aamir Khan's Dangal father does exactly the opposite and there is critical acclaim for that too.

So no one is able to see here what I see? A father who wanted to achieve great things and could not, pushing his daughters to achieve that for him. Isn't this same as every other Indian parent who could not become a doctor, IAS, get into prestigious schools or study abroad and want their kids to fulfill these wishes? The sport itself or patriotism should not drive the conversation away from the helplessness of young girls who are deprived of their femininity and are pushed to be something they did not choose to. Yes, after a while, the girls do like the magic in the sport and become competitive. That does not and should not prove that it is ok to push the children for a 'greatness' you perceive.

But my problem is not simply the pushy father. About girls and the lessons we teach them unknowingly. In the second half of the movie, the first daughter 'steers off the way' by growing her hair and painting her nails. She is even confronted by her sister about this. Are we attaching masculinity to the sports? Isn't that irony if we are trying to promote female athletics and athletes?

In the movie, 'Bala' there are two prime female candidates to prove my point. A dark skinned lawyer who considers all girls who dress up to be dumb and a fair skinned, well groomed content creator who thinks beauty is the only way she can succeed or even survive in the world. But as we see in the court drama scene, the argument which Yami Gautam makes is profound and hits hard. So she is capable of things beyond her appearance. Just that she was never told so or even considered so as Indian society has only school performance as yard stick for intelligence.

The problem is to look at things as mutually exclusive with the growing need for a harmonious civilization.

Stretching movie for a pun? (Do patti)

I am genuinely curious now at the content process of Netflix. So this movie just dropped, 'Do Patti' which I would have probably skipped if not for the review by 'Tried & Refused Productions'. However I wouldn't consider this a review as one, I dont have much to say about the movie and two, I have watched 2 hours and 7 minutes movie in 1 hour 10 minutes or so. But I keep wondering if there are some elements of writing that are unique to Netflix like, 1. Rushed creation process: So it is a business, everyone agrees. I have spent considerable time with business writing, either myself or working with other writers. I know the way it works and how it hinders actual process of creation. On top of that, Google and Meta and their antics. From Do Patti I can definitely gather the rush from the wobbly script that was built. A story and script that otherwise could have been a delight. 2. Need for integrating unnecessary stars for the pull: This again derails the writing ...

Movies that surprised me in 2024

So this isn't a list of movies that released in 2024 but its from the movies I watched in 2024. I think 2 years is definitely a golden milestone for new mothers, my viewing list jumped tenfold latter half of last year. 1. Family star - So let me start with this absolute mess of a movie. It surprised the hell out of me because after watching the 2.5 hours of so many faces, locations and songs, I sat and wondered. I wondered if there is a single moment in the movie that can shine. I am not looking for an entire scene, just a shot or may be a small micro expression from an actor or something. Like give me anything. Nope, not a single second of those 157 minutes. How did they manage that colossal waste? It reminded me of this old Telugu movie joke where a reluctant job applicant was asked to spell coffee by the interviewer who already decided to hire him and the applicant answers 'KAUPHY'. The interviewer is stunned to see that he answered in a way that not even one letter is ...

Home Decor Aspirations & More from Vamsi !

Lay back in your seat, close your eyes and think of your first memory of watching a movie in theatre. Was it something of glaring big screen or a quick nap or restlessness to get to dinner? Then don't read anymore. I grew up in the second (may be third) generation of explosion of movie in India and lately I realized it has a distinct impact on my worldview. I lived in the world of those characters on the screen for those 2.5 hours and if one watched a movie with me, you know what I am talking about. Here I am giving love back to movie that taught me, everything. Especially, empathy. Just watched this video of "Ennenno varnalu" from Avunu Valliddaru Ishtapaddaru. What is amazing is how much I remember about the song? Could be partially the TV rights bought by Gemini that made it onscreen almost every weekend or something more aspirational. The head shaking of Kalyani after eating tamarind rice or spitting out pieces of omelette, parrots on the moon, rose in the garden that...
